Mould, damp and despair. But great location!

The hostel hath courteous folk in service, and standeth in a right fair and convenient place.

  • Yet lo! What a moth-eaten and mould-corrupted lodging is this. I say "lodging" most lightly, for scarcely might I rest mine weary head upon the foul-smelling sheets, within a chamber dank with dampness and the savour of many feet. Shouldst thou unbar the window, it openeth not unto the fresh airs of heaven, but rather unto a sealed court, whereby no wholesome breeze may enter. And when thou dost seek to cleanse thy person, thou shalt be sore astonied by the privy chambers. The timber of the stalls is so rotted that the doors bow and warp, and one must wrestle mightily to escape the place of ablutions. Above, the ceiling is bespeckled and stained with mould, and there is neither fan nor vent to draw forth the foul vapours. Thus doth great condensation gather overhead, which, having cooled, descendeth in droplets most unbidden upon thy person whilst thou endeavourest to wash thyself. Verily, I have lodged in roadside stables that afforded greater comfort and sweeter airs. One star, and that only for the kindness of the staff and the excellence of the situation.

Good location and common area vibes, bad bathroom mould and rickety stained beds.

There’s lots to like about staying at the pickled frog - the location is fantastic for exploring the town centre, the staff are friendly, and the vibes in the common areas are very relaxed and social. The common area is great for lounging and meeting people and the staff are helpful in giving advice for things to do and see. We stayed during winter and found our room stayed warm and we were nice and cosy in bed.

  • The lack of cleanliness and building upkeep are the biggest downfalls of the pickled frog. The shower/bathroom ceiling and walls are covered in mould and cold condensation that drips on you while you’re in there, the smell in the kitchen is of old food, i could feel the springs in the mattress, the mattress and pillows were stained, and the bunk frames are rickety and wobble a lot when anyone moves. There were several taps/showers that just wouldn’t turn off and extremely limited space within the 4 bed dorm for anything except a small backpack per person. No where to hang or dry your towel if you’re on the bottom bunk.
