⭐☆☆☆☆ Non-refundable booking with an undisclosed restriction
Unfortunately, nothing. The property refused to resolve a problem that it had created by failing to disclose an essential booking restriction before accepting payment. I rarely leave negative reviews, but I feel other guests should be aware of this. I booked this property through Booking.com and paid approximately €100 for one night during the Gnaoua Festival in Essaouira. The city was virtually sold out because of the festival, leaving us with almost no accommodation options. The only rate offered by the property was non-refundable. At no point before payment was it mentioned in the Booking.com listing, the property description, the house rules, the booking process or the booking confirmation that the hotel would refuse accommodation to unmarried couples when one of the guests is Moroccan. Around ten minutes after the reservation was confirmed, we received the property's standard welcome message. Only at the very end of that generic message did we discover this restriction. This was particularly surprising, as the Moroccan Ministry of Justice publicly stated in 2024 that hotels should no longer require marriage certificates from guests. Regardless of the legal position, if this property chooses to enforce such a policy, it should clearly disclose it before accepting payment for a non-refundable reservation. We are a genuine long-term Moroccan-European couple and have been living together in Morocco for almost two years. We immediately tried to contact the hotel to clarify the situation. We sent messages and called every telephone number we could find, but nobody answered. We also contacted Booking.com as soon as we became aware of the problem. Unfortunately, no effective solution was provided before our arrival, while the situation was unfolding or even afterwards. At every stage of this incident, we were left to deal with the consequences on our own.

- • When we arrived at the property, the manager was not present. The receptionist called her by phone, and she spoke directly with my partner. Rather than trying to find a practical solution, she insisted that we could not both stay because we did not have a marriage certificate. Our very first request was simple: we asked her to authorize a refund so that we could find alternative accommodation ourselves. She refused, saying that the reservation was non-refundable and that the situation was "our problem." Under pressure, my partner checked in alone while I was left without accommodation. She did not use the room or any of its facilities. She did not even stay in the room for five minutes. The only thing she did was place our unopened backpack in the wardrobe. About fifteen minutes later, she returned, collected our belongings and we left the property. Before leaving, she told me that the room was extremely hot, making it unlikely that we would have been able to sleep comfortably. Before leaving, she told me that the room was extremely hot, making it unlikely that we would have been able to sleep comfortably. With Essaouira virtually sold out during the Gnaoua Festival, we had no choice but to drive 25 km outside the city to find the nearest available accommodation, despite having already paid €100 for a non-refundable reservation that ultimately went unused. Whether you agree with the property's policy or not is beside the point. If such a restriction exists, it should be clearly displayed before guests make a non-refundable reservation, not revealed only after payment has been completed. Transparency is essential. Unfortunately, this experience was neither transparent nor fair.
