Planters Inn is in dire need of a serious refresh.
This April was my wedding in Charleston. I wanted a very traditional lovely hotel for myself and family. I had eaten here in the past and loved the hotel. I stayed in one of the Governors Suites. The rate was quite expensive, but this was for my wedding! Our suite, and indeed the entire hotel was in need of new furniture, electrical repairs, and a serious cleaning. I was greatly disappointed. My husband and I agreed that we would not choose Planters for our next visit unless serious renovation had occurred. On a more pleasant note, the Peninsula Grill is still quite good, staff, food and ambience excellent. Also Bennes was good next door.

Average
We recently stayed at the Planters Inn in Charleston, South Carolina, and overall had an okay experience. The hotel itself is absolutely beautiful—charming, well-maintained, and exactly the kind of historic atmosphere we were hoping for. The location is also a huge plus, making it easy to walk to shops, restaurants, and many of Charleston’s main attractions. Unfortunately, the service did not match the setting. We didn’t receive much of a welcome upon arrival, and throughout our stay there was little effort from staff to check in on us or ensure everything was going smoothly. Our room wasn’t really followed up on, and when we stopped by the front desk for assistance, the responses were minimal and not especially helpful. We ended up being mostly self-sufficient during our stay, which was disappointing given the level of the property. In summary, while the hotel and location are wonderful, the lack of attentive service made this stay feel average rather than exceptional.—

- • Room is dated. We booked Planters Inn because we wanted Old Charleston experience. We value and understand furniture will be period specific. However, property need to be updated. Property needs a good cleaning and updating while maintaining old Charleston feel. Furniture has stains, rooms need to be painted, bathroom lights and fixtures were dirty, caulk in bathroom was missing or moldy. For $500 a night we expected more.
Top-Tier Service
Our stay was exceptional, and the staff went above and beyond to make our engagement weekend truly special. Linda and Bill at the front desk, along with Bellmen Cole and Mike, were incredibly friendly and helpful every step of the way. Prior to arrival, Linda reassured me that a late check-in and valet would not be an issue despite travel delays. Upon arrival, Cole greeted me and coordinated with the front desk to have a bottle of champagne waiting in our room after the engagement. Bill even took the initiative to track my fiancée’s flight and called the room to ensure I left on time for her arrival at 1:00 AM, an unexpected and thoughtful touch. The staff also seamlessly transferred us to our upgraded room on our final night in just over an hour, and we never had to touch a bag. Everyone made the weekend effortless, and everything was handled promptly and professionally. We will be back and are already looking forward to our next stay.

A Charleston Gem
Wonderful old school experience. Staff is friendly, responsive and room is comfy and quiet. Stayed 3 nights and loved it. The parlor in the lobby offered fruits, cookies and coffee and guests could meet and converse. Hope they boost the temperature on the coffee. It's location is at a free shuttle stop to make it easy to get uptown or down to Bay street. The restaurant is perfect for breakfast or dinner.
